Visitors can sponsor 8 ft. gingerbread house by helping The Salvation Army

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit and the Royal Park Hotel in Rochester are teaming up to give people a chance to start a new holiday tradition and at the same time, help their community by sponsoring a piece of Rochester’s largest gingerbread house, which will be on display in the lobby of the hotel from Nov. 23 through Jan. 1.

Gingerbread House 2008Visitors to the Royal Park Hotel will be able to sponsor one of the 1,500 gingerbread “bricks” that were used to build the 8 ft. house by making a $10 minimum donation to The Salvation Army. Sponsors will receive a special certificate recognizing their contribution. Bricks can be purchased at the Rochester Sugar Shoppe located in the Royal Park Hotel lobby.

“The Salvation Army is extremely thankful to The Royal Park Hotel for included us in this wonderful holiday tradition,” said Major John Turner, general secretary for The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit. “We’ve seen a 60 percent increase in the need for our services in the last year alone. The $10 that people give to sponsor a gingerbread brick will help us to feed one person for a month.”

On Monday, Nov. 23 at 11 a.m. the Royal Park Hotel will unveil the life-size homemade gingerbread house. Holiday enthusiasts are invited to be part of the ribbon cutting of the life size gingerbread house. A child from The Salvation Army will help cut the ribbon to kickoff the festivities.

“This year guests will be able to enjoy the gingerbread house while helping to give their neighbors a very special Christmas,” said Sue Keels, director of sales and catering for the Royal Park Hotel. “The annual unveiling of the gingerbread house and the holiday activities surrounding it are highly anticipated in the community.”

Ingredients used to create the Royal Park Hotel gingerbread house include: 220 cups of sugar, 300 lbs of gingerbread mix, 110 cups of powdered sugar, 90 gallons of water, 240 eggs, 200 lbs of holiday candy, 144 whirly lollipops, 400 candy canes and 580 hours of dedication to a wonderful holiday story worth sharing.
