>>> STRIVE Hockey Fest <<<

The Salvation Army STRIVE Youth Hockey program experienced a priceless opportunity to meet ‘n’ greet Dan Cleary of the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday, August 29 at the Joe Louis Arena during Hockey Fest. Twenty-two children from the first-ever STRIVE Youth Hockey program attended the event, where they were given the opportunity to skate on-ice, learn new hockey skills and of course meet Mr. Cleary.

What is STRIVE?
STRIVE’s (Student Training for Integrity, Vitality, and Education) mission is to help meet the spiritual, mental and physical needs of the whole child through an organized floor hockey program. This allows children the chance to experience a sport they may not previously have considered.
STRIVE is a grass roots effort to not only provide children new opportunities, but also to partner with community members to grow the sport of hockey. Because Detroit is the home of the Red Wings—a.k.a. Hockeytown—STRIVE garnered the professional team’s attention and support through the Detroit Red Wings Foundation. Now, STRIVE is able to help children meet their full potential because we have the tools necessary to do so, courtesy of the Detroit Red Wings Foundation.
How does STRIVE work?
Each STRIVE session is scheduled to run for 12 weeks, during which participants are introduced to the sport with basic floor hockey instruction, learning USA Hockey rules and regulations. Once every fifth week, players will have an on-ice experience to practice their new-found skills.
Players (girls and boys welcome) ages 7-13 will be grouped appropriately into Junior Varsity and Varsity teams. The program consists of four weeks of off-ice practice, led by a USA Hockey certified coach/mentor. After every four weeks of practice, players are treated to an on-ice experience. View some pics!

The STRIVE Youth Hockey Program can be found at participating Salvation Army Community Centers. Each Community Center schedules practices on different times and dates, so those interested in signing up must first check with the local Community Center.
